The Beginnings of the Ash Family in Wiltshire, England

It was the authors primary purpose to document the beginnings of the Ash Family in Wiltshire, England and to identify the ancestors of William Ash of Chippenham, Wiltshire, England.

A secondary purpose was to add to the first six generations of the family and help descendants in determining their connection to this family.

A third purpose was to find and get to know as many of William's children's descendants as possible.

The author started her search with William and his wife Sarah and followed their line back 6 generations and then forward 6 generations. The book covers all of William Ash's twelve children.

The article below, published in 1974, brought a phone call from cousin Christopher Ash in England.

For six generations, the Ash family was involved in the cloth industry. This was called cottage industry with the women doing the spinning and carding and the men performing the task of dyers, weavers, fullers, shearers, and clothiers (industrial middleman who disposed of the finished piece of cloth to the merchantile middleman who was called a draper).
